Montrose Art Partner receives state award

Julianne Johnson is convinced no one works harder than her colleague Lissette Riviere.
In an effort to acknlowledge Riviere's day-in and day-out effort as an Art Partners case manager with Partners in Montrose and Ouray counties, Johnson, Art Partners case manager in Delta County, nominated Riviere for a prestigious state award dedicated to those who work in the arts.
Several weeks ago, Riviere learned from Colorado Creative Industries that she was one of three in the state to receive the 2015 Governor's Creative Leadership Awards for her "significant commitment to the state's creative landscape through civic leadership and volunteerism including
advocacy, vision, collaboration or innovation," according to Colorado Creative Industries, which formally announced the winners Thursday.
"I was shocked and honored," said Riviere, who will receive a piece of original artwork from Fort Collins artist Bill Zaun. "She told me she was going to nominate me and I said, 'Oh, all right,' not thinking I had a chance. So when they let me know a couple of weeks ago, I was like, 'Really? Me, really?' "
In Johnson's opinion, Riviere was an obvious choice.
"Oh my God, you never saw anyone work so hard," Johnson
said. "I don't think she receives the level of recognition she deserves for all that she does."
Riviere has been in her role as Art Partner case manager  with Partners, specifically working in the Montrose, Ouray and Ridgway areas for eight years, pairing teenagers with adult artisans who can mentor youth.
"It took me a good year and a half to understand the power of the program, how art and mentoring can change youth," Riviere said. "I've had kids who really didn't know what they wanted to do after they graduated from high school and were matched with an artist and decided to go to college and pursue an arts career."
Not everyone involved in the arts mentoring program goes on
to become a professional artist, Riviere added, but the opportunity to spend time with adults through the program and put together an art show where they can sell and make money helps the teens build self-esteem, confidence and personal investment in the community where they live.
Riviere is busy working on the next Partners Radio Auction which starts at 7 a.m. Tuesdau on KUBC 580 AM, 94.1 FM and 103.7 FM in the Montrose area. People can visit the Partners website www.partners-west.org  for a list of auction items.
Riviere and Johnson will attend an awards luncheon Friday at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center.

The Auction is our most important fundraising  event of the year and it enables us to continue our work with children who are often faced with difficult circumstance. If you would like to support Partners in this important work by becoming a Board Sponsor at one of two levels (500.00 or 300.00) please call us at 249-1116 and ask for Lissette. Or if you are an individual or business with a product or service to donate please do not hesitate to contact Partners.
Our Board sponsors, donors and auction bidders make this an exciting and fun event
. We welcome your participation and invite you to keep an eye on our Auction Items Tab above which will be updated as new auction items are added.
Every March our big group activity is our Annual Kite Fly.
Long time supporter of Partners Mentoring and Senior Partner, Jim Allen and his Junior Partner took our kids through building (from scratch) a "guaranteed to fly" non-tear fabric kite. When we were done building, decorating and snacking our kids and mentors hiked up the hill to Lincoln Elementary and flew our kites. The weather was beautiful, the wind a little tricky, but a good time was had by all! Take a look at our pictures on our facebook page:  http://www.facebook.com/PartnersMentoring

April's BIG Activity was Ice Skating at the Glacier Arena in Grand Junction. Some of dusted off those blades and joined up on April 18th with Mesa Partners for a morning of camaraderie and adventure on the ice.  If you missed this activity but would like to give it a try, skates and helmets are provided at the rink, so no worries if you've grown out of your last pair! This is a great activity to do with your partner and affordable during free skate. Give them a call. Thank you Mesa County Partners for the invite. We had a great time.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

LISTEN TO WHY  PARTNERS WORKS,    STRAIGHT FROM TWO MEMBERS OF THE PROGRAM!

Summer's coming. Nothing like a youngster to get you out of the house and down to the lake or the river. Think about spending the day fishing with your own junior partner. What could be better?

Call (970) 874-4661 or (970) 249-1116 and ask us about being a Partner. There's nothing like having a young person in your life to get you outside. Clean up that old tackle box. You know you want to!
